CO and Smoke alarms
We keep reminding people to check those smoke alarms to make sure they are working, but do we make sure they are in the right places? Go to our site resource for CO and Smoke alarms to see where they should be located. Make sure you know the difference between an “Alarm” sounding and a “Low Battery” alarm!
Cronomer Valley FD has responded to over 100 false alarms this year due to cooking, maintenance on a system, or steam from a shower setting these smoke alarms off. If you are experiencing smoke from burnt toast or steam from a shower setting off your alarms, contact your alarm company for alternatives to the detectors you are using or location of same.
CO Detectors are a must on every level of the home! Carbon Monoxide is an odorless gas that is deadly. It can be caused by incomplete combustion of natural gas or propane in appliances, a vehicle exhaust, or common exhaust from a generator or woodstove if not ventilating properly. Know what the “Alarms” sound like on these detectors as well. Common symptoms of CO poisoning are headache or nausea when exposed to relatively low levels. CO is cumulative and can cause death with low levels over time or high levels in a short period.
With winter upon us many homes and businesses are not ventilated as much as the rest of the year. That’s why it’s important to have CO detectors in working order to assure our safety.
